About No Burn Broome

NoBurnBroome.com was formed by the residents of Broome County NY on April 15, 2020, to organize opposition to the use of incineration in the proposed Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Project in Endicott. The initial name for the group was Stop Incineration in the Southern Tier, but it quickly changed to No Burn Broome because the first name was too long for a website domain name.

Broome County residents want elected officials to represent their best interests in the pursuit of expanding opportunities for everyone. But they do not want to sacrifice either their health or the environment in the process.

The group recognizes society’s need to find ways to recycle lithium batteries, especially those used for electric cars, but a review of the scientific literature indicates that there are other ways of doing this which do not involve incineration.

On March 30, 2020, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) gave the project an Air Permit to the Korean company Sungeel MMC of Americas LLC.  This permit allows the release of these Known Human Carcinogens: 2,3,7,8-dioxin, Chromium(VI), Beryllium, and Formaldehyde from the facility. The site is adjacent to 4 baseball fields, a swimming pool, community green, and homes.

The proponents of the project on the Endicott Village Board of Trustees reject the fact that incineration is a part of the recycling process that will be used. However, they are wrong. The project uses incineration in its processing of the batteries.

The group produces a Newsletter which anyone can receive by signing up here.
